For nine consecutive years, plastic items have been the major source of
rubbish found. In 2003, the proportion of plastic was 36% of total items surveyed,
outweighing all other categories of rubbish.
- Australians use 6.9 billion plastic shopping bags per year - if these were tied together they would stretch around the world 37 times.
- Less than 3% of total plastic bags are taken to the central collection point, other than a dump, for recycling.
- Plastic bags are produced from polymers derived from petroleum. The amount of petroleum used to make a plastic bag would drive a car about 11 metres.
- 230,000 plastic supermarket bags are dumped in landfills every hour.
